Four Reasons to Switch to Natural Skincare

By Rippan Sandhu

There’s an old saying in Ayurveda which tells us that we shouldn’t put anything on our skin that we wouldn’t put in our mouths. It sounds simple, but it’s amazing how even the people who are most stringent about their diets are willing to overlook chemicals and GMOs in their skincare — when your skin is the largest organ of your body! By switching to clean beauty, you’re ensuring that everything your skin absorbs is something that you could have had for lunch. Clean and natural skincare — particularly at Ayurda — is full of active ingredients that come from the earth itself: rose, saffron, almonds, cucumber, aloe vera. On the other hand, non-natural skincare includes man-made ingredients and chemicals whose long term effects have not been confirmed. Think about what you’d rather have in your body — something that grows in your garden, or something with a name that ends in -cide?

IT LESSENS THE CHANCE OF IRRITATION

While you should always patch test a new product in case of any surprise irritations, if you have sensitive skin or are highly allergic, then natural skincare is a far safer bet than the alternative. The reason is quite simple — by the time we hit adulthood, we tend to know our allergies and what irritates our skin. By gravitating towards natural skincare, you can cut the chances of running into any allergens or irritants simply by avoiding the ingredients you know don’t agree with you. This simple approach isn’t always possible with non-natural skincare, which might contain artificial ingredients you might not know of, that includes the micro-chemical you’re allergic to. If your skin is easily irritated, switching to natural beauty could be an easier way of avoiding harmful reactions.

IT’S A LIFESTYLE CHOICE

One of the greatest things our customers tell us is that not only do they love how our products make them look, but they love it makes them feel. Natural skincare, like a good diet and exercise regimen, is a way of life that slowly but surely begins to seep into your everyday choices. We like to think of our products as a gateway to a more natural and cleaner lifestyle. Once we remove the mental block we’ve been conditioned into that tells us skincare products must contain harsh chemicals in order to be effective, we begin to make more conscious choices about what we eat, what we buy, and how we treat our bodies on a day to day basis.

IT’S GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

As the 2020s are now being dubbed ‘the climate decade’, especially in the wake of the Covid crisis, environmental concerns are shooting up on the priorities of many skincare brands — and personally we hope it’s a trend that’ll continue! Natural products tend to have more environmentally friendly packaging — here at Ayurda, we package our products in glass and recyclable plastic in order to reduce our carbon footprint. But the environmental benefits of natural skincare goes far beyond what type of bottle your products come in — non-natural skincare tends to use chemicals such as sulfate, which is manufactured from petroleum and is highly damaging to marine life when washed down the drain. By keeping our products chemical free, pollution free, and cruelty free, we’re ensuring that we’re doing more than just keeping your skin clean — though that’s important! — we’re keeping the planet clean.
